Rector’s eNews 35 – 06 November 2024
/ Michaelhouse Life / Newsletters / Old Boys / Rector's eNewsI am sure that you are already aware of the tragic and untimely death of a Grade 8 boy at Hilton College, Allan Maclean, who was away on half term with his father and friends on a fishing trip on the Zambezi River when he was struck by lightning and killed. We have sent our deepest condolences to the Hilton community, and they will all be in our thoughts and prayers as we all know how very difficult it is to lose a friend and brother. May Allan rest in peace.
I also wanted to let you know that I was away in New York and London last week speaking principally to Old Boys who have benefited from financial assistance whilst they were at Michaelhouse and others who have the capacity to contribute to our Bursary Education Trust.
Our Development Office led by Mrs Frances Bolttler is constantly seeking to augment or increase the capital which enables boys to come to Michaelhouse. About 40% of our boys receive some sort of financial aid through the drawdown from that capital whether this is in scholarships or financial aid and the target, as fees increase, along with the number of requests for financial support, is to increase the percentage of Michaelhouse boys receiving this sort of support to 66 % of the school by our 150th anniversary in 2046.
The trip was successful in that the awareness of our needs has increased dramatically and there are several Old Boys who have expressed a wish to contribute to the Bursary Educational Trust or to sponsor a boy through Michaelhouse.
