St Michael Award
The St Michael Award was instituted in the School’s centenary year, 1996, with the following criteria:
- The candidate must be a living Old Boy of Michaelhouse.
- He must have dedicated a significant part of his life to serving others in an exceptional and selfless manner.
- His actions should not be driven by personal gain or recognition.
While not required, personal sacrifice may further demonstrate his selflessness. - The award reflects the qualities of St. Michael—one of the seven Archangels—who embodies courage, compassion, and the pursuit of truth and justice.
- The ideal candidate will exemplify these virtues in his service to others.
The Rhodes Scholarship, named after Cecil John Rhodes, is an international postgraduate award for selected foreign students to study at the University of Oxford. It is widely considered the “world’s most prestigious scholarship”.
This scholarship is awarded much like the Rhodes Scholarship, but is for students to study at Cambridge University. View the list of Michaelhouse Elsie Ballot Scholars below.

Michaelhouse’s
Heritage
In 2012, the Michaelhouse Archive embarked on a digitisation project as a means to restoring many of the old and fading pieces of Michaelhouse memorabilia. These items take the form of physical uniform, caps and sports regalia as well as many old documents, books and photographs.
Along with the preservation aspect of the digitisation project, it has meant that a selection of the Michaelhouse Archive is now available online to all Old (and existing) Michaelhouse Boys from around the world as a resource for research and/or reference. Visitors to the site can search according to any year or name, and will currently see a small selection of photographs available online as well as all of the Michaelhouse Chronicles (from 1897) and a select group of reference books written about the school.

Office Bearers
In 1896, Michaelhouse’s founder, James Cameron Todd, reflected that “a boy’s connection with his school is not severed when he leaves, but lasts throughout life. His whole tone, moral and spiritual as well as intellectual, is largely determined for life by his school.”
One hundred and twenty-nine years and generations of Michaelhouse boys on, we are still guided by our founder’s spirit and the belief that each boy who passes through our gates is taking the first major step on a life-long journey of self-discovery, personal growth and camaraderie.
The distinctive ivy-clad architecture of interlinked quadrangles, which has inspired a sense of belonging for generations of boys, remains a constant touchstone to the over 6 900 Alumni across five continents.
