Rector’s eNews 29: 11 September 2024
/ UncategorizedEarly on Saturday morning, our C Block boys gathered in our temporary Chapel (the Schlesinger Theatre) in the presence of many of their parents in order to bless their participation in the C Block Journey which is a 13-day experience during which they walk, cycle and paddle through some of the most scenic parts of KwaZulu-Natal. We are very conscious of the enormous impact the C Block Journey makes on many boys who have to “dig deep” to keep going in circumstances which are sometimes adverse and in which they are well outside their comfort zones.
Over the years, we have gathered some of their reflections. In essence, there is a similar theme which runs from year to year. Here are some of the comments of the boys:
“When you have done C Block Journey you become a senior boy. It is the gateway to the senior years at Michaelhouse.”
“It wasn’t easy, but then I know we were told it wasn’t meant to be easy and that is how you develop character.”
“It is the biggest growth experience I have had in my time at Michaelhouse.”
“I got to know some boys as never before. The biggest challenge is not the summiting or having a sore bum from cycling, but the solitude.”
“When I returned, I couldn’t believe that I was on the same planet.”
“I remember that it was quite emotional getting a letter from my parents.”
“I was really cold and wet, but I also remember the good times with my mates.”
“C Block Journey gives you time to think about your life away from any distractions such as social media.”
We wish our boys well as they face up to the challenges.
