Rector’s eNews 37: 20 November 2024
/ UncategorizedOn Monday, the majority of our matric boys will be finishing their IEB examinations and will be, thereafter, engaged in a ceremony to bid them farewell. In recent years we have inducted the E Block boys by leading them into the gates of the school and up Warriors Walk to the Chapel and, on the departure of the A Block boys, the reverse happens.
The A Block boys and their parents will gather in the Memorial Dining Hall on Monday where the boys will sign the Leavers’ Register and be presented by the Chaplain with a bible and by the President of the Old Boys’ Club with an Old Boys’ tie. Parents will line the walkway down the terraces and the President of the Old Boys’ Club, Sean Lumley, will lead the boys past the statue of St Michael slaying the dragon, along Warriors Walk and out of the school. These young Old Boys will be part of another closely-knit brotherhood of Michaelhouse men who will be expected to care for others through service throughout their lives. We hope that these events will create a poignant memory for them and that many will reflect on a school career in which they have learnt to deal with triumph and adversity and during which they have developed a deep understanding of people, apart from enjoying success in the academic realm and in their chosen fields of interest. We wish them fulfilment, reward and joy as they move on to new challenges and develop new talents and interests.
On Monday A Block parents will also be welcomed to the St Michael’s Club which is for parents who are not Old Boys and whose sons are leaving Michaelhouse. The purpose of this Club is to enable past parents and past staff members to keep in touch with the school and others associated with Michaelhouse through receiving information and continuing their friendship with those whom they have met over the years when their sons have been here or, in the case of members of staff, to maintain their association with the school to which they have, in most cases, given so much. The gathering of the St Michael’s Club will take place in the Main Quad from 12h00 prior to the gathering for the matriculants in the Memorial Hall and if you would like further information about this, please do contact our Head of Development, Frances Fleming Bolttler (frabol@michaelhouse.org).
