Rector’s eNews 33: 23 October 2024

/ Uncategorized

Following a meeting of the Michaelhouse Trustees on Friday, the school arranged a tour for our Chairman’s Club of the new developments here in Balgowan – the Chapel, Tatham, Pascoe and the Makan Centre – on Saturday before hosting a lunch for them in the re-modelled pavilion at the Roy Gathorne Oval. The pavilion has been internally redesigned to allow for an upgraded kitchen and servery facility, a small bar and fireplace as well as ladies lavatories and an area for cricket paraphernalia. The purpose of the re-modelling is to make the pavilion more user-friendly for receptions and similar events, particularly with the number of festivals and tournaments which the school holds over holidays to augment our non-fee income.

The redesigning of the pavilion has been done largely with a bequest from the estate of Roy Gathorne who was a much-loved Michaelhouse master from 1954-1984. Roy was Head of History, Housemaster of East for 14 years, 1st XI cricket coach for 22 years, Senior Master and then Acting Rector for two terms.

It was fitting that two great Michaelhouse and South African cricketers of yesteryear, Mr David Dyer and Mr Henry Fotheringham, should have attended with their wives and also that two of our boys, Carlyle Hawkins and Luneziwe Mshengu, who are the recipients of Financial Aid should have addressed those present and expressed their appreciation.

The Chairman’s Club is a group of people in our Michaelhouse Community who, inter alia, are keen to enable talented but needy boys to come to the school. They come together twice a year to share in the success of the school and its boys. The entry fee is within the reach of many of our Old Boys, parents and supporters and further enquiries may be made through Mrs Frances Fleming Bolttler on frabol@michaelhouse.org. Those who have, in the past, been the recipients of financial assistance in coming to Michaelhouse may, in particular, like to become involved in supporting our drive for additional membership.
