Rector’s eNews 20: 17 June 2026

We have just come through an incredibly busy few weeks, and as we look ahead, the pace is not set to slacken just yet. The next few days we will be showcasing the very best of what our school community has to offer, from academics and the arts to competitive sport and camaraderie.

Our boys have been working hard and the academic focus of the last few weeks culminates this Thursday as the examination period comes to an end. There will be little time for a breather, however, as Thursday evening shifts our focus to the arts. We are delighted to invite you to the Two Schools in Concert on Thursday night, hosted this year at Hilton College. This is always a spectacular evening that showcases the immense talent of our choir and musicians. I highly recommend attending what promises to be a wonderful celebration of music.

Friday is an important day for our Academic Departments. The E and A Block Open Days will take place and I strongly encourage all parents to use this valuable opportunity to meet with your son’s teachers to discuss his progress, celebrate his achievements and address any areas of concern as we move into the second half of the year.

The sporting excitement begins on Friday afternoon with a few hockey fixtures, serving as the curtain-raiser for a big day on Saturday. This weekend, we play host to our traditional rivals for what promises to be a wonderful Derby Day of rugby and hockey.

As we anticipate fierce competition on the fields, let us cheer on our boys with enthusiasm, passion and pride. Let our support be a source of inspiration for them. I ask that all parents, Old Boys and supporters show the utmost respect to the coaches, umpires and referees. Without their dedication, these matches could not happen. We want a day full of highly competitive sport, played and watched with the highest regard for sportsmanship, integrity and mutual enjoyment.

While we welcome the opportunity to connect with friends and enjoy the atmosphere after the final whistle, please remember that Michaelhouse is a residential community where our staff and their families live. We ask that our guests kindly respect their privacy and help us transition back to our quiet campus routines as the evening begins to draw in.

Thank you, as always, for your unwavering support of the school and the boys. I look forward to seeing many of you on the sidelines, in the concert hall and around the campus over the next few days.

On a sporting note, I would also like to extend my congratulations to the following staff members who completed the demanding, yet rewarding, Comrades Marathon this past week:

Mr Paul Snyman in 08:41:28 and Mr Xavier Saunderson in 11:40:05.
