It was with gratitude and excitement that I welcomed the boys and staff back to Michaelhouse at the beginning of this week for the Pentecost Term. I trust that the past holiday has been relaxing and restorative for them, even if it has been busy for hockey and rugby players and jazz musicians, amongst others. Indeed the boys were generally very successful in the tournaments and festivals in which they participated and flew the Michaelhouse flag high. Detailed results will follow towards the end of this eNews.

A high point of the festivals was the 1st XV rugby victory over Bishops who were celebrating their 175th anniversary. Many Old Boys and supporters of Michaelhouse were there to give terrific support to our team and, after the match, I was pleased to make the presentation of a bench to the Principal of Bishops, Mr Tony Reeler. The bench is situated on a corner of the famous Piley Rees field and the inscription on the plaque simply says “Michaelhouse-Bishops 2024 Celebrating Friendship”. The plaque serves as a reminder to anybody passing by as to what schoolboy sport between great schools is about.
