Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded to boys of outstanding ability entering Michaelhouse in E Block (Grade 8). Scholarships are valid for the five year duration of a boy’s career at Michaelhouse, subject to an acceptable level of performance being maintained.

Scholarships for pupils registered to enter Michaelhouse in 2023

• Major Open Scholarship: Up to 75% of tuition and boarding (Independent school candidate)
• Minor Open Scholarship: Up to 75% of tuition and boarding (Independent school candidate)
• Open Exhibition Scholarship: Up to 50% of tuition and boarding (Independent school candidates)
• Closed Scholarship: Up to 30% of tuition and boarding (Traditional feeder school candidates)
• Major Trust Scholarship: Up to 75% of tuition and boarding (State school candidate)
• Minor Trust Scholarship: Up to 75% of tuition and boarding (State school candidate)
• All Rounder Scholarships: Up to 75% of tuition and boarding (All candidates)
• Music Scholarships: Up to 50% of tuition and boarding (All candidates)
• Sports Scholarships: Up to 50% of tuition and boarding (All candidates)
• Arts Exhibitions (Drama & Creative Art): Up to 15% of tuition and boarding (All candidates)

Values of scholarships awarded are fixed in percentage terms for the duration of the scholarship being held. State school candidates must have attended their current school for a minimum of two years prior to date of entry to Michaelhouse.

Criteria

Scholarships are awarded to registered boys of outstanding ability entering Michaelhouse in E Block (Grade 8), or in the case of a Music Scholarship, awarded in either E Block or C Block (Grade 10). Scholarships are valid for the five year duration (or three year duration in the case of certain Music Scholarship awards) of a boy’s career at Michaelhouse, subject to an acceptable level of performance being maintained.

Academic Scholarships

Candidates who wish to apply to write the Academic Scholarship examination at Michaelhouse must have achieved an aggregate of 85% or more at the end of their Grade 6 year.

Sport Scholarships

Michaelhouse offers a range of merit based sport scholarships for boys of outstanding ability.

Registered sport scholarship applicants will be considered based on:

• The highest level of representation in one or more sports
• A cross section of sport played
• Level of commitment to sport
• Sportsmanship

Music Scholarships

Candidates who wish to apply for a Music Scholarship audition at Michaelhouse should have achieved a minimum standard of Grade 4 (UNISA/ ABRSM/ Trinity) in either voice or an instrument of choice, although a degree of discretion may be applied. These scholarships may be awarded to a candidate in either E Block or C Block. Candidates invited to audition for Music Scholarships will be selected on the following criteria:

• Highest level of competence in one or more musical instruments
• An interest in musical development

Arts Scholarships

Registered candidates who wish to apply for a Drama or Creative Arts scholarship should submit a letter of motivation from their Drama or Art teacher, and should submit examples of their recent creative work.

All Rounder Scholarships

All Rounder Scholarships may be awarded at the School’s discretion to a candidate who displays a rounded ability and approach to academics, sport and cultural activities. The candidate would have qualified for consideration through his attendance at two or more of the Academic, Sport or Music Scholarship assessments.
