Sport

The educational programme of any top school should reflect a balance between academic, cultural, environmental and sporting activities. In this respect Michaelhouse endeavours to remain at the cutting edge of each pursuit. Michaelhouse offers a vibrant sport programme with a choice of 14 sport options. We are fortunate to enjoy some of the finest sporting facilities in the country.

The school has 12 playing fields including two Astroturf hockey facilities, seven turf cricket pitches, a dedicated cricket oval, an athletics track, eight tennis courts, three padel courts, a six-court squash complex with three glass-backed courts, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, a 25m x 25m heated swimming pool, a 30m x 25m water polo pool, a state-of-the-art gymnasium, a golf driving range and a dam for canoeing enthusiasts.

To assist with planned fitness programmes, the High Performance Centre is equipped with professional weight training and aerobic equipment. Specific fitness programmes are designed for the boys and overseen by the specialist services of a Sport Scientist and Biokineticist. This provides each boy with the opportunity to develop physically in accordance with his sports’ demands and to excel in his chosen fields.

The 25 x 25 swimming pool allows for boys to retain a year-round interest in swimming and maintain a high level of fitness.
Water polo is a highly popular sport with an excellent following. The addition of a full size water polo pool and an all-year training pool provides more time in the water for enthusiasts of aquatic disciplines.

Basketball

Approximately 200 Michaelhouse boys participate in basketball, making it the second most popular sport at the school. They represent the school at U14, U15, U16 and Open levels.

Canoeing

Cricket

Cricket has always been a popular sport at Michaelhouse and up to seventeen teams are fielded weekly in season. Our cricketers participate in the traditional South African School festivals and maintain fixtures with all the major cricketing schools in KwaZulu-Natal as well as a number of schools from other provinces.

Cross Country

Cross country is offered as a second sport for those boys who are really keen on middle distance athletics; and in recent years our athletics have dominated both junior and senior provincial leagues.

Golf

Golf at Michaelhouse is played mainly at the picturesque Bosch Hoek golf course which is conveniently located only 6 km from the school. Approximately 70 boys play golf either as their main or secondary sport.

School facilities include a driving range and putting green.

Since then the sport has prospered, with the school regularly fielding eight Open, four U16, four U15 and four U14 teams.
