We are committed to the Zulu concept of ILIMA: "We work together!"
Thus Michaelhouse boys are involved in local community schools, crèches and orphanges working together with other young people.
Boys are involved through House-Based Projects:
Founders - Upgrading of Asithuthuke School Classrooms - painting and replacing ceilings.
East - Upgrading of Asithuthuke School Classrooms. Replacing broken windows and painting of school buildings.
West - Boys help estate staff children is an organised English Reading Programme.
Farfield - Boys visit aged people at Greendale House in Howick.
Tatham - Boys are involved in coaching hockey, cricket and soccer at Nottingham Road Primary School.
Pascoe - Boys are involved in sports coaching and vegetable gardening at Hlanganani Primary School
Baines - Boys visit residents of Sunfield Home for mentally and physically challenged people.
Mackenzie - Boys visit Khazimula orphanage in Lidgetton, helping children with Homework, computer skills and sports coaching.
DONOR SPONSORED PROJECTS
1) Mrs Esther Zuma's crèche in Lidgetton.
2) Peter Brown Award - In 2009, 2 boys, Nikolai von Stackelberg and Grant Walker are busy creating a new Sunday School facility at Hlanganani School.
3) Balgowan Health and Social Development - local representatives from each non-academic department within the School combine to address local issues.
Sister Joanne McMillan oversees the local clinic and HIV Aids work. Pastor Sipho Zuma looks to the spiritual and material needs of the people of Zenzane Village. Mr Nkosi runs a Sunday School. Adult Literacy Programme (ABET) is headed up by Mrs Marianne Crane and Mrs Debby Evans.
4) Art - Sandile Sibiya runs weekly art classes with 12 students from Asithuthuke School.
5) Art Competition - 10 local rural schools are participating in a competition. The theme for this year is "All creatures great and small". 1500 entries expected! All art material supplied.
6) ICDL - computer literacy skills offered to the local people including non-academic staff. Run by Mrs Julie Flanegan and Mr Mfaniseni Phungula.
7) SMILE - Basic English Literacy for 72 Grade 4 and 5 pupils from Crystal Springs School in Lidgetton. 3 teachers and 12 B Block boys each week for a period of 16 weeks in any one year.
8) Basketball - 3 teams of boys and girls from Asithuthuke School are coached by Mr Sandile Sibiya.
9) Nottingham Road Farmers Association - gave a substantial donation for each of 4 local schools namely, Nottingham Road Combined, Nottingham Road Primary, Asithuthuke School, Hlanganani School. This is being used for educational aids.
10) Maths Support Teaching is given to Nottingham Road Combined School and Jabula School by Messrs M Phungula (Academic Maths Teacher) and S Mtshali (Intern). Substantial improvement in half-yearly exam results have been shown.
