Academic Programme

Academic pursuits receive priority at Michaelhouse. Research shows that a boy's learning needs are quite different to those of a girl. Michaelhouse places special emphasis on teaching programmes that support this difference.

To facilitate improved learning, classes are small and the teacher-pupil ratio is 1:10. Additional academic support is offered in study groups under the direction of a teacher.

The Home Room Programme provides daily mentorship. Boys are guided in life and study skills under the mentorship of a dedicated Home Room Tutor.

Media and Business Education Centre
The library is stocked with over 16 000 fiction and reference books. A comprehensive newspaper and magazine section provides current information on a variety of subjects. There are a number of monitors for individual video viewing, with a Group Viewing Room for video study and entertainment. The adjoining 50 seat lecture theatre has networked computer, audio visual and smart board facilities.

Sciences
There are four Science laboratories and four lecture rooms with networked computer facilities, data logging facilities and audio-visual equipment. The Department also has a dedicated, networked computer cluster. The three Biology laboratories are generously equipped with research and audio visual-equipment.

Information Technology
There are three computer centres, each with twenty-four computers and an additional computer workroom available for general use. Further computer clusters are situated in the Biology, Science, Geography, Music and Art departments as well as the Media and Business Education Centres. An active technology-enhanced learning programme is integrated into teaching and learning programmes with electronic smart board facilities available in a number of classrooms.

Academic Curriculum
There are several examining bodies in South Africa. Michaelhouse, along with most other independent schools, has elected to write the examinations of the Independent Examinations Board (IEB), which is fully accredited by the national governing education council, Umalusi. The standards of the IEB are held in high regard by international and South African tertiary institutions.

An Extended Academic Programme is also offered. Boys who are exceptionally talented in any of the academic disciplines are invited to join after the E Block (grade 8) end-of-year examinations. The programme includes regular seminars and tours and recognises the need for additional intellectual stimulation and development in these students.

A vast number of subject package options offer the opportunity to gain a National Senior Certificate with university entrance dispensation. Boys sit this National Senior Certificate examination in A Block (grade 12).
